What is APAGD?

The Activity Professionals Association of Greater Dallas (APAGD) is a volunteer organization for anyone interested in or supportive of the activity profession. APAGD exists primarily to:

• Enhance the professional and educational standards of the members
• Improve the quality of activities provided by professionals employed in senior facilities
• Educate other social and health professionals as to what our association represents
• Raise awareness of the value of the life enrichment profession within the elder care industry and the contributions made to person-centered care

When is the next APAGD meeting?

Starting in 2021, we have reformatted the Association. There are no longer bimonthly meetings, we will host one large seminar in the fall of each year. See the seminar page for more information.

How do I join APAGD?

We no longer have memberships, but we do ask you email us your contact information at apagdboard@outlook.com to join our mailing list and join our Facebook group 

Do I have to be working in the activity professional field to attend the seminar?

Not at all; all are welcome to join us!

 

How do I become an Activity Professional?

For some types of facilities, “certification” is not necessary. We encourage volunteerism as a starting point for someone with no experience working in senior care. If you do have senior care experience, many facilities will hire a person with the right attitude and personability.

For working in long-term care, you must be “qualified” by the state of Texas. This includes at least 2 years of experience working in the Activity field, certification as a Recreational Therapist or Occupational Therapist, or the recommended route of completion of a state approved course. There are several course options, the most prevalent being the Modular Education Program for Activity Professionals (MEPAP) or certification through the Consortium for Therapeutic Recreation/Activities Certification (CTRAC). Dallas classes for MEPAP are provided through our founder, Natalie Davis’s company, ActivTimes.

Who does APAGD report to? 

While there is no true supervisory body, the APAGD follows the guidelines and learning goals of the National Certification Council for Activity Professionals, NCCAP, and supports the mission and vision of the National Association of Activity Professionals, NAAP.
